Redwood Empire Association of Code Officials

Welcome to the Redwood Empire Association of Code Officials (REACO). Formerly known as the Redwood Empire Chapter of the International Conference of Building Officials (REICBO). The Association consists of jurisdictions in the northern California counties of Lake, Marin, Mendocino, and Sonoma and includes building officials, design professionals, consulting firms and the construction industry.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Redwood Empire Association of Code Officials (REACO) is to promote life safety and the protection of property through the development, interpretation and application of consistent building codes, standards and policies.

Founding of the Conference

The International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) is considered to have been founded in 1922. This antecedent to the modern organization was then known as the Pacific Coast Building Officials Conference. The Pacific Coast Conference published the first edition of the Uniform Building Code (UBC) in 1927. Since 1927 there have been many editions of the Uniform Building Code and it has become the prevalent building code in the United States. The UBC has been translated into many languages and was the basis for the national codes of Japan and Brazil. Publication, maintenance and promotion of the UBC was only one of the functions of ICBO, which was a non-profit service organization owned and controlled by its member cities, counties and states. The First Chapters In 1949 the concept of ICBO members forming into affiliated groups, which would foster the goals and principles of the Conference, was realized with the acceptance of four Chapters. The Redwood Empire Chapter was one of those four founding chapters and is formally licensed by ICBO.

International Code Council (ICC) Affiliation

The The Redwood Empire Chapter reincorporated in 2003 as the The Redwood Empire Association of Code Officials (REACO) in affiliation with the International Code Council (ICC) . As of August 2009 there are 337 ICC chapters and approximately 50,000 members of ICC.

The Redwood Association of Code Officials

The membership of the Redwood Empire Association of Code Officials is comprised of building officials, building inspectors, fire professionals, architects, engineers, contractors, construction industry members, and others in four northern California counties and cities within those counties. Redwood Empire Association of Code Officials is registered with the State of California as a non-profit corporation, as well as being recognized as a federally tax exempt organization. The profit that the Association seeks is not financial but rather in the betterment of the communities its membership serves.
